The charming unspoilt County Town of Hertford, and Hertford Castle lies 25 miles from London, amid the rolling countryside of East Hertfordshire, steeped with over 1,000 years of history since before Saxon times.

The site taken up by Hertford Castle has been occupied since from when the Normans built their first motte and bailey fortification by the River Lea. The 15th Century Gatehouse is all that remains today of Hertford Castle surrounded by the 11th Century stone & flint Curtain Wall.

Together with a year-round calendar of events, including Summer Band Concerts, Castle Gatehouse Open Days, Garden Festival and a Family Fun Day, The Castle offers the visitor a place to enjoy the tranquillity and beauty of the Castle gardens and gentle flowing river.

Within walking distance the interesting town centre contains fascinating architecture, friendly and specialist antique shops, bustling Saturday market, local art gallery and an array of eating places and public houses to suite all tastes and pockets.

At the centre of the town of Hertford lies the Portland stone War Memorial topped with its distinctive bronze hart.

The Museum offers a variety of events providing fascinating days out for all ages as well and the displays depicting early days of museum with its unusual curio collections brought back from travels around the world. There is also an opportunity to enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the Jacobean-style garden.

Castle Hall, a purpose built modern centre offers a range of local dramatic, operatic and musical productions.
