Only 100 kilometres from London, White Horse Country stretches from the edge of Oxford to the threshold of the Cotswolds. Its enchanting landscape is marked by a mysterious Pagan past – the very name comes from the oldest chalk figure in Britain, dating back over 3000 years.
The landscape’s calm undulating beauty has inspired poets, painters and musicians. It offers the choice of two national trails for walking: the prehistoric Ridgeway slips across open downland under big skies. Alternatively mile upon mile of the Thames Path leads you on lush willowy walks to the rewards of waterside pubs, hidden villages, elegant houses and an unhurried atmosphere that belongs to another time.
Abingdon on Thames is White Horse Country’s largest town and can claim to be the oldest continually occupied settlement in England. Nearby, the engaging market town of Wantage, birthplace of Alfred the Great, nestles at the foot of the Downs under the ancient Ridgeway. Faringdon, the smallest town, perches on the golden limestone ridge between the two beautiful river valleys of the Ock and Thames.
