Frome
Frome is a historic market town with hidden gems of architectural interest making it a rewarding place to explore. It is an attractive town built on steep hills with cobbled streets. Architecturally well preserved, there are more listed buildings in Frome than in any other Somerset town, including The Blue House: built as an almshouse and school, and Rook Lane Chapel, now an Arts Centre. A walk around the town will uncover parts of the Medieval street pattern, including Cheap Street with a leat (stream) running along its length, as well as fine examples of 16th, 17th and 18th Century housing.
Frome is as much a centre for arts and crafts as for heritage and architecture. There are a number of Galleries and contemporary Craft Centres. Many professional craftspeople work from individual workshops with specialities ranging from designer jewellery and textiles to musical instrument makers and an artist blacksmith. The arts are well represented with two theatres and a major ten day Festival in early July each year.
A wide range of individual and specialist shops add further character to the town along with a variety of quality eating places. All in all Frome offers plenty for a day out in any weather. It is also a wonderful centre from which to explore the surrounding area with Bath, Wells and Glastonbury, spectacular stately homes and gardens all in easy reach.
