Lincoln
Lincolnshire lies on the east side of England less than two hours north of London. It is a very attractive rural county but with a vibrant history which has produced many famous sons and daughters – people like Captain John Smith and Sir Isaac Newton to name just two.
The City of Lincoln boasts one of England’s loveliest Cathedrals, surprisingly one of the least well known. There are some magnificent country houses and the fertile soils of Lincolnshire mean that we have some splendid gardens too. We have developed a series of themed brochures on such diverse subjects as antiques, churches, aviation heritage, crafts and gardens – all designed to help you make the most of your visit.
The County has strong connections with America – from Captain John Smith, to the ‘Separatists’ who worshipped in secret at the beautiful mediaeval Gainsborough Old Hall. They eventually managed to escape to become members of the Mayflower Pilgrims. A later exodus left Boston, England to found Boston, Massachusetts. Religion also played a prominent part at Epworth – a pretty little town in the north of the county. It was here, through the sons of Samuel and Susannah Wesley, that Methodism was born and adjacent to the inspiring church of St Andrew where they all preached, you can visit the Old Rectory where John and Charles grew up.
