William Blake was inspired to write the words to “Jerusalem” by a view from a pub in the village of Lavant, north of Chichester, looking up to the Trundle on the South Downs. Such is the striking beauty of West Sussex, an unspoilt and largely unexplored part of the British Isles on the coast of southern England within easy reach of London and the channel ports. Where stunning seascapes meet the rolling South Downs, this green and pleasant land is the ideal place for a romantic weekend away.

Sussex by the Sea includes the traditional seaside resorts. Bognor Regis, officially one of the sunniest places in Britain, and Littlehampton offer sandy beaches and plenty of watersports while along the coast, Worthing is famous for its pier.

Just a short distance away are the rolling South Downs dotted with pretty towns and villages. Arundel with it’s magnificent 11th Century Castle and Gothic Cathedral nestles on the River Arun. The narrow streets are lined with boutiques specialising in curiosities.

Further west is Chichester, a cathedral city since 1075 and dating back to Roman times. Stane Street, the road to London, is viewable in parts and Fishbourne Roman Palace remains the largest find of its kind in the area. In contrast to the bustling city centre, Chichester Harbour covers 50 miles of shoreline, a natural habitat for a wide variety of flora and fauna.

Combine a walk through ancient woodland and lush hillsides with one of the magnificent country-houses like Standen and Petworth House. Stroll among flower-filled gardens like Leonardslee, Borde Hill and Wakehurst. Savour the sporting atmosphere at Fontwell or Goodwood racing or relax on a sunset boat trip around Chichester Harbour. Explore the reedbeds at the Wildfowl and Wetlands Centre, imagine bygone days at the Weald and Downland Museum or dine first class on the Golden Arrow at Bluebell Railway.
