Historic Christchurch

Near the Priory is the Red House Museum which was purpose-built as a workhouse in 1764, where you can learn all about the history of Christchurch. Nearby, on Christchurch Quay is Place Mill, an historic water mill which dates back to Saxon times and is now open to the public as an Art Gallery.Beyond the Bowling Green are the ruins of Christchurch Castle, built around the ninth century and the centre of a siege during the Civil War when a Parliamentary force held the Castle and the Priory grounds against a siege by Royalist forces.
.The Museum of Electricity is housed in an old Edwardian power station right in the centre of the town and houses one of the most extensive collections of historic electrical equipment in Great Britain. The building dates from 1903 and used to be the town's power station. It has been carefully restored and provides an ideal backcloth to more than 700 exhibits, `hands on' items for children and has a. Bournemouth tramcar of 1914 on display.
.You can learn all about Christchurch’s rich history by joining one of the guided walks (see website for ful ldetails) or by following the Blue Plaques Millennium Trail, produced by the Christchurch Local History Society.
Only 4 miles away is the magnificent Highcliffe Castle, a Grade 1 listed mansion which was built between 1831 and 1835 by Lord Stuart de Rothesay and was once described as "the most important remaining example of the romantic and Picturesque form of architecture". A full programme of events and exhibitions take place throughout the year.
.A short drive from the town centre is the Bournemouth Aviation Museum , a new open-air aviation museum with classic aircraft and interesting cockpits right opposite Bournemouth Airport. With pre and post World War trainers, two jet fighters, the prototype of a small, sleek executive jet, RAF rescue helicopter, a selection of cockpits from two passenger aircraft, a jet bomber, a supersonic fighter and the magnificent Vulcan - you can even sit in the cockpits and ”twiddle the knobs”, wherever safety considerations allow.
