A Historic Tour of Harrogate

Harrogate

Visit the Harrogate District, the perfect destination set in the heart of Yorkshire.
Britain in Bloom winning Harrogate, a classic English spa town, is one the UK’s most attractive towns combined with a reputation as a bustling conference and exhibition destination.

Visit the elegant Royal Pump Room Museum to taste the sulphur water and see some of the original equipment used for spa treatments in days gone by. Relax in the sumptuous Turkish Baths and Health Spa, which has been faithfully restored to their colourful Victorian splendour.

Smart streets and mews are filled with stylish restaurants, bars and cafés, complemented by a tempting choice of shops from boutiques to antiques. Enjoy a stroll through the Valley Gardens with their striking floral displays and lush green pinewoods that lead to the Royal Horticultural Society Garden at Harlow Carr.

Historic Knaresborough sits proudly on the banks of the River Nidd. Marvel at one of the best views in Yorkshire from the grounds of the medieval castle overlooking the viaduct, River Nidd and surrounding countryside. Go boating on the river and visit the castle and museum, complete with dungeon and sallyport. Old Mother Shipton’s Cave and Petrifying Well is reputed to be one of England’s oldest attractions. Make a wish in the wishing well and see the famous petrifying well where objects are turned to stone.

Stay amid the ancient charms of Ripon - the ‘Cathedral City of the Dales’. The magnificent cathedral dominates the skyline and is one of Yorkshire’s finest treasures. Every night hear the Hornblower ‘setting the watch’, have a Ripon in wonderland experience at Thorpe Prebend House, take the Law & Order Trail visiting the Courthouse, Prison & Police and Workhouse Museums and spend a day at Ripon Racecourse.

Travel around the rolling hills, wild moorlands, market towns and villages of Nidderdale, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, enjoying fabulous scenery and vast open spaces. Pateley Bridge is a good starting point with cosy tearooms, traditional shops and the Nidderdale Museum. Nidderdale is also home to the bizarre rock formations at Brimham Rocks and ‘Yorkshire’s Little Switzerland’ - How Stean Gorge.

From ancient ruins to stately homes there are plenty of great attractions from the World Heritage Site of Fountains Abbey and the white knuckle rides at Lightwater Valley Theme Park to the splendour of Ripley Castle and Newby Hall.

Whatever you choose to see and do and wherever you stay you can be assured of a very warm Yorkshire welcome.
