Hertfordshire is one of the home counties and situated just north of London with Essex to the east, Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire to the north and Buckinghamshire to the west.

The principal town of Hertfordshire is Hemel Hempstead (pop. 89,000), followed by Watford (pop. 81,000) and Stevenage (pop. 80,000). St Albans is the Roman city of Verulamium, the second biggest town in Roman Britain after Londinium.
