Discover The Heart of Wiltshire, a landscape steeped in prehistory, at the centre of which stands Avebury World Heritage Site, just eighteen miles north of Stonehenge and within easy reach of the historic City of Bath. King Charles II was recommended by John Aubrey to visit Avebury because “...it does as much exceed in greatness the renowned Stonehenge as a cathedral does a parish church”. Today Avebury attracts visitors from around the world who come to marvel at the largest stone circle in Europe, which dates back to 2000BC. One of the most impressive ceremonial landscapes in Britain, Avebury offers the visitor an opportunity to explore the site and learn of the history that shaped the landscape. The countryside includes many other important monuments including causewayed camps, hedges and barrows. The chalk downlands and grasslands of the Marlborough Downs and Vale of Pewsey have supported communities from the earliest times . Follow the footsteps of ancient civilisations and explore the rural landscape which reveals much of its past.
The Kennet and Avon Canal passes through the countryside, much of which is designated an Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Discover the romantic charms of a cruise along the canal visiting the many historical and architectural attractions along its banks.Visit the Caen Hill flight of 29 locks at Devizes, a magnificent feat of engineering which carries the canal up a rise of 234 feet.


The historic market town of Marlborough has one of the most impressive high streets in Europe, flanked by splendid Georgian and Tudor buildings among which you will find many excellent inns and hotels. Marlborough College dominates one end of the high street.

Founded in 1843 as a public school and originally intended for sons of the clergy, past pupils have included Sir John Betjeman and William Morris.
