HISTORY AND HERITAGE OF RUGBY

Nestling in the heart of the Undiscovered Warwickshire countryside, Rugby holds the unique position as the birthplace of rugby football. As you would expect, many of its attractions stir the passions of the rugby enthusiast... the Close at Rugby School where the game began in 1823 when William Webb Ellis ‘took the ball in his arms and ran with it’. The Rugby Football Museum where the first rugby ball was made in 1842 housing a treasure-trove of rugby memorabilia and the Pathway of Fame Trail around the town celebrating famous events and players.

There is however, much more to this attractive corner of Warwickshire than just the game of rugby...Peaceful canals and country parks, attractive villages and a vibrant market town with an excellent range of places to eat and drink. The ‘jewel’ in Rugby’s crown, is its impressive Art Gallery and Museum. Distinctive and contemporary, with its sweeping curves and shiny metallic roof, it’s Warwickshire’s answer to the Tate Modern!

The ancient Borough of Rugby dates back to an early Anglo-Saxon settlement. Located at the cross-roads of England, transport brought prosperity to the area firstly from the Roman Watling St and Fosse Way and later from the Oxford Canal and the railways.

If you are a nature lover or water sports enthusiast there are many opportunities to get out into the surrounding countryside with several country parks on the doorstep. Garden lovers can also discover the delights of Ryton Organic Gardens and their new attraction the Vegetable Kingdom.

Rugby’s central location makes it an ideal base from which to explore the other delights of the Heart of England including Shakespeare’s Stratford-on-Avon, Warwick Castle and the restored beauty of Althorp House.
