Derwentside
Unspoilt countryside, beautiful landscapes, history and heritage, Derwentside has it all!
Derwentside combines stunning countryside with an exciting array of attractions and activities for everyone.
The district has a strong industrial heritage including the world’s earliest railway at Tanfield and an insight into the coal mining and steel production industries. Visitors can have an unforgettable day of steam train rides at Tanfield Railway and have the opportunity to visit the oldest existing railway bridge in Britain – Causey Arch.
You can visit Hownsgill Viaduct, a monument to Victorian Heritage, the Terris Novalis Sculptures, located on the former Consett Steelworks site and there’s also Beamish, the North of England Open Air Museum, where you can experience life in the early 1800’s and 1900’s. And not forgetting an English Heritage Property – 18th Century Derwentcote Steel Furnace, the oldest surviving furnace of it kind in the country.
Enjoy a great day out at a variety of attractions across the district. See and touch animals at close quarter at Hall Hill Farm and visit Diggerland, a unique adventure park that lets all the family see and experience the fun side of mechanical diggers.
With the conversion of old railway re-opened as walk ways, cycle routes and bridal ways, visitors can now explore Derwentside as part of their active holiday experience. For the more adventurous the C2C Cycle Route offers cyclists one of the most challenging rides and why not take a hot air balloon ride over the Derwent Valley and view the District at its best.
Water sports, fishing, numerous gold courses and activity centres mean there is something for everyone in Derwentside. For Further Information Contact:
