Sedgefield, Durham County, England
Sedgefield
The North East is known as the birthplace of railways where both George Stephenson and Shildon based rival Timothy Hackworth are widely acknowledged as the founders of rail travel as we know it.
Locomotion is an £11 million project, a joint venture between Sedgefield Borough Council and the National Railway Museum at York, the first branch of a national museum in the region. The development combines the existing award winning Timothy Hackworth Museum, two further buildings, which are of historical importance in terms of the town’s railway heritage and a brand new high quality 6,000 sq ft collection centre.
The museum highlights the railway and social history of Shildon, sustainability and conservation and the history of transport. The museum houses sixty vehicles, the collection of which changes on a regular basis with the national collection from York, including appearances by the Flying Scotsman – probably the world’s most famous train.
The museum benefits from many environmentally and technologically advanced features. The collections centre boasts a photovoltaic roof, which will provide energy to the building via solar panels as well as a windmill and state of the art under floor heating. The kilometre walk along the track from the welcome building to the collections centre incorporates nature trails, preserved wildlife areas plus a landscaped picnic area and children’s playground.
There is modern, interactive interpretation of the exhibits throughout the museum. An education centre, offices, retail, catering space and landscaped parkland feature at this first class visitor attraction.
Steam train rides on a replica of Sans Pareil, one of Hackworth’s engines, the original of which is cased in the welcome building, are available on summer weekends and event days which will carry people to the collections building. Alternatively you can walk or catch the bio-bus. Locomotion is fully accessible for disabled visitors.
