Easington

Easington District is situated in the County of Durham, and is first mentioned in records dated 900AD, making it one of the oldest settlements. The monuments, churches and halls that grace the area are a reminder of the earliest medieval and Saxon settlers. There are many examples to choose from throughout the district, however, the most notable are the 11th Century churches of Seaham and Easington and the remains of the 12th Century stronghold of Dalden Tower at Dalton-le-Dale. The connoisseur of history will be kept extremely busy in the district as roots run deep into ancient Saxon times

Our unique coastline, which won the Countryside Agency's official designation as a Heritage Coast in 2001, is of particular interest to geologists, ornithologists, botanists and entymologists, not to mention sea anglers.

Inland the district has lots more to offer with its fabulous countryside and woodlands. Castle Eden Dene, a National Nature Reserve that has the largest and best preserved gorge woodland in Britain, as well as being home to the Durham Argus Butterfly. You cannot fail to be captured by the beauty of this picturesque landscape with its scenic pathways and abundant wildlife.

We also have excellent walkways, cycleways linking into national routes, fabulous golf courses, angling and lake fishing, facilities for parachuting, horse riding, and leisure centres for numerous sporting activities. The £50 million Dalton Park shopping outlet attracts many visitors.

This may or may not have come as a surprise that our district has a great wealth of history and achievement interwoven within our unique heritage. Combine the attractive shopping centres, excellent accommodation including a gold award hotel, new housing, award winning coastline and world-class businesses and our northern tradition of friendliness and is it surprising that people wish to pay us a visit!
