American Museum at Claverton Manor, Bath

This county in the West Country is composed of some of the most beautiful scenery in England. Sandwiched mainly between Devon, Dorset and Wiltshire with a tip of Gloucestershire to the north the Quantock Hills and the limestone of the Mendips are particularly lovely. Exmoor too, of course, holds a special appeal and is typified by the wild animals that roam it and the softness of the turf beneath your feet. Rich in legend and history, Somerset has the closest associations of any English county with King Arthur, with Cadbury said to be Camelot and Glastonbury Abbey the burial place of Queen Guinevere. This is also ‘Wessex’ and its churches are noted for their tall towers.

Famous for its cider, the county is full of thatched roofs, and picture-post card scenes and is perfectly central for exploring the West Country in detail.

The former county of Avon (1971) has now been dissolved and reverts once more to Somerset. The jewel in the crown here is beautiful Bath with its Roman beginnings and elegant Georgian architecture. Bath is the most popular destination in Somerset and home to many attractions worth visiting including The American Museum, The Roman Baths, Thermae Spa and Holburne Museum and Art Gallery to mention just a few.

Nearby, Bristol is a vibrant and attractive town and is also important as Cabot set sail from here to the New World in 1497. A quick drive a cross the severn bridge will see you in Wales in no time at all.
