Highclere Castle near Newbury

A delightful county with a rich past, only 50 miles from London and neighbours to Surrey, Sussex, Berkshire, Wiltshire and Dorset. It’s maritime history is second to none and it was from Portsmouth and Southampton that England set out to rule the waves. The Mary Rose, Bucklers Hard and the coastal defences bear testimony to days gone by. The New Forest is another major reason for staying in this county. Planted by William the Conqueror and roamed by wild but not ferocious animals, the Forest is still very much lived and worked in with ancient communities pocketed amongst the woodland. Winchester is the city that Alfred the Great made his first capital and the whole surrounding area is steeped in history. There are a plethora of historic houses, castles and monuments to discover in this glorious county including Avington Park (Winchester), Broadlands (Romsey), Highclere (near Newbury, Berkshire), Jane Austen's House (Alton) and Beaulieu to mention just a few. Thirty minutes from Portsmouth Harbour and a favoured haunt of Queen Victoria, The IIsle of Wight has been fashionable as a holiday destination ever since. See Carisbrooke Castle, Osborne House, watch the yachts at Cowes or simply walk the soft undulating coastline.
