BLAENAVON INDUSTRIAL LANDSCAPE
A UK WORLD HERITAGE SITE

In December 2000 UNESCO inscribed the Blaenavon Industrial Landscape as a World Heritage Site for the following reason: "The area around Blaenavon bears eloquent and exceptional testimony to the pre-eminence of South Wales as the world's major producer of iron and coal in the 19th century. All the necessary elements can be seen, including coal and ore mines, quarries, a primitive railway system, furnaces, the homes of workers, and the social infrastructure of their community.”

Today Blaenavon proudly tells the story of her past in a variety of ways. Come and explore - a truly warm welcome awaits. The Industrial Landscape extends into some of the finest and most spectacular scenery in Wales. It covers an area of 33sq km, nearly half of which lies within the Brecon Beacons National Park. Its many attractions provide an enriching experience, with a range of attractions and landscape ideal for walkers and cyclists.

Blaenavon has numerous places of interest for you to visit, these include the World Heritage Centre, Big Pit: National Coal Museum and Blaenavon Ironworks.

The Tourist Information Centre is situated in the Ironworks Museum. A comprehensive stock of local attraction leaflets and brochures are displayed. The Centre, which has a small gift shop, also operates a bed booking service. The Tourist Information Centre issues admission tickets to the Ironworks Museum and also stocks a wide range of CADW leaflets. Guided tours are also booked by way of the Centre. For visitors with ancestral connections to Blaenavon a genealogy service is also available. A car park for wheelchair users is situated within the Ironworks Museum and is accessed by the main gate. Toilet facilities are also available for persons with a disability.
