Heritage Britain

The county of The Isle of Man

Peel Castle, Isle of Man

The Isle of man lies like a jewel in the Irish Sea almost equidistant between England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales and indeed on a clear day the ‘Calf of Man’ affords a view to all five kingdoms. Long and thin in shape the Isle of Man is self governed, enjoys lower taxes than the UK and is rich in both natural and man made heritage with particularly strong evidence of marauding vikings remaining. The rugged coastline and the seventeen enchanting glens makes the Isle of Man an attractive proposition to energetic walkers whilst those interested in the myth and legend of the island could visit Fairy Birdge or the Neolithic chambered tomb - Cashtal Yn Ard. You may wish to carve your way through the countryside to castletown upon The Isle of Man Steam Railway or enjoy the breathtaking scenery on the electric mountain railway which will help you up a 1 in 12 incline from Laxey to the summit of Snaefell. The Isle of Man is a popular destination for Ornothologists where Peregrines, Puffins and Owls are just a few of the various species to be spotted here. There are Wildlife Parks, Basking Shark spotting trips, Nature Trails and Heritage Sites all within an Island which is around ten miles wide and forty miles in length. It’s well worth a visit!
