Eilean Donan Castle

The next step of journey could take you to Aviemore, premier winter sport resort, one of five in Scotland, and then Inverness, the Highland capital. The most Northern city in Britain, Inverness has also enjoyed its fair share of historic moments through the ages, none more important to Scotland as the Battle of Culloden, which celebrated its 250th anniversary in 1996. This is one of the most beautiful areas of Scotland with the snow capped Cairngorm Mountains (the highest in Britain), Loch Ness with its mysterious Monster ‘Nessie’, and perhaps surprisingly some fine sandy beaches.

The most remarkable geological feature is the Great Glen, a vast rift valley which splits Scotland in two: its three deep lochs are connected by the Caledonian Canal. The grouse on the heather covered moor and the red deer on the forested hillside provide game for the sportsman The landscape is littered with relics of Iron Age forts and Bronze Age burial grounds such as the impressive stone cairns at Clava, ringed with a group of standing stones, Inverness also offers the same access to the Isle of Skye that the dejected Bonnie Prince Charlie chose in the aftermath of defeat.

To the north the moors and hills of Ross-shire and Sutherland, to the west, Loch Ness with its famous inhabitant. Continue down the Caledonian Canal to Fort William and Britain’s highest mountain Ben Nevis. The Region of Fort William and Lochaber must rank as one of the most sparsely populated areas in Britain and is blessed with spectacular scenery, a joy at any time of year.
