Stanford Hall, Lutterworth
Leicestershire in the East Midlands and, in particular, the county town of Leicester, is associated with manufacturing and is also famous for its grazing lands, heaths and fine hunting country. The former county of Rutland now falls within these boundaries but still retains its individuality. With Belvoir Castle standing guard, Rutland is a tiny county of quintessentially English villages bedecked with flora and inns beckoning you to imbibe in a pint of foaming ale.
It was in Leicestershire that the house of York lost its grip on the crown and, at the Battle of Bosworth field in 1485, the victorious Henry Tudor pronounced himself King. Clearly one of the most important single conflicts in the history of Britain, a visitor centre today marks the spot close to the Warwickshire border. Delightful historic houses here include Stanford Hall and Oakham Castle and the area is also famous for it’s Pork Pies and Stilton cheese.
