Banqueting House online: information and bookings

Step inside the Banqueting House and walk in the footsteps of dazzling courtiers.

This revolutionary building, the last surviving part of the great palace of Whitehall, was finished in 1622 for King James I. Sir Peter Paul Rubens’ magnificent ceiling serves as a reminder of the venue’s long and splendid history.

Created by Inigo Jones, it was intended for the exuberance of court masques but is probably most famous for a real life drama: the execution of Charles I, which took place here in 1649 to the ‘dismal, universal groan’ of the crowd.
