One of Britain’s most dramatic ruins, the castle controlled the gateway through the Purbeck Hills and has been an important stronghold since the time of William the Conqueror.

Defended during the Civil War by the redoubtable Lady Bankes, the castle fell to treachery from within, and was heavily slighted afterwards by the Parliamentarians. Many fine Norman and early English features remain.

Situated in the shadow of the castle is the interactive visitor display where you can learn about the fascinating history of this medieval castle.

The Castle grounds are perfect for a picnic, or visit the National Trust tearooms where you can sample the home-made cakes in the delightful garden.

Pick up an events leaflet for more things to see and do during the season. The programme will include living history, open air theatre, a festival of traditional crafts, the ever popular Archaeology Weekend, a series of special guided walks, childrens’ school holiday activities, plus much more.
