The historic towns of Windsor & Eton have grown up over the centuries in the shadows of Windsor Castle. Its imposing towers and battlements loom large from every approach to the towns, creating one of the world’s most spectacular skylines. No other royal residence has played such an important part in the nation’s history and the influences of the monarchy can be seen throughout the area. You should allow 3 hours to visit the Castle to really do it justice.
Windsor was of particular importance to the Norman conquerors given the significance of the River Thames as the main trade route from the capital to the country. The Thames remains an important feature of the region offering easy strolls along its banks and lots of messing about in boats. If you are the outdoors type the area also offers horse-riding, golf, walking in Windsor Great Park and horse racing at Ascot and Windsor.
The cobbled streets of Windsor hold many surprises with buildings dating from the 17th century. The Old King’s Head in Church Street bears a plaque recording the warrant for the execution of Charles I in 1648. A few doors along is Burford House, reputed to be where Charles II housed his favourite mistress, Nell Gwynne. Queen Charlotte Street is recorded in the Guinness Book of Records as the shortest street in Britain at just 51 feet, 10 inches.
Today Windsor is a stylish mix of ancient and modern, offering specialist and contemporary retailing, excellent eating places and all types of accommodation. The area boasts no less than 13 visitor attractions including two of the UK’s top 20, Windsor Castle and Legoland Windsor. A French Brothers boat trip, a visit to the Savill Garden, a City Sightseeing open top bus tour or a horse-drawn carriage ride are essential ways to discover more of the area’s hidden treasures. Just a short stroll from Windsor Castle, across the River Thames, is the picturesque 15th-century Eton High Street and the world famous college. With its unique collection of contemporary art and specialist shops, Eton is a collector’s paradise selling everything from art deco furniture to haute couture, dolls houses to antique jewellery.
