Weobley Heritage Trail online: information and bookings

The Heritage Trail takes visitors on a self-guided tour, learning about the Historic Houses, their architectural significance and telling you tales of the past. You can download audio tracks spoken by Mary Rhodes, BBC broadcaster and Weobley girl, or you can simply follow the numbered plaques around the village. You might also find it useful to download a Map of the Trail and both these are available at www.weobley.org. The best news is that you can turn up when you like and it won’t cost a penny. How’s that for Weobley hospitality?

In mediaeval times Weobley was a flourishing market town whose wealth came from the wool trade, known locally as Leominster Ore. It was also noted for ale, glove and nail making. Weobley’s fortunes and waxed and waned over the years and with no railway or canal, the industrial revolution passed Weobley by. This led to great poverty. However, it left a legacy of beautiful timber framed houses, many of which still stand. Today Weobley is at the heart of a thriving agricultural industry.

The Weobley Heritage Trail will take visitors on a passage through time, explaining how mediaeval traders sold their wares through unglazed windows and show what architectural feature to look for in the many building styles in the village, some of which are unique in Herefordshire. The Trail follows plaques placed at appropriate places that explain what you will see of building structure and what happened here in times past.

Mary Rhodes, BBC presenter and Weobley girl, has recorded an audio version of the Trail which very soon can be downloaded from www.weobley.org to your mobile phone, MP3 player or other device. The spoken word adds even more enjoyment to the Trail which has nineteen information plaques throughout the village. A large map in what was formerly the bus shelter, but now serves as an Information Point, shows the locations of each plaque, a little history of Weobley and an introduction to timber framed buildings. A trail map is also available to download from the Weobley website.

You choose just how much of this compact village you want to see at one time. Organise your tour around lunch or tea at one of the excellent establishments in the village. Come for a day or better still, make a weekend of it! Weobley is not just a pretty place and rightfully deserves its place as the Jewel in the Crown of the Black and White villages.
