Royal Botanic Gardens Kew online: information and bookings
The gardens contain the finest plant collection in the world. The gardens are designated a World Heritage Site. Within the grounds are Kew Palace and the Princess of Wales Conservatory.
The gardens today present an enjoyable mix of landscaped lawns, formal gardens, and greenhouses. Equally important, Kew functions as a botanical research centre and maintains the largest plant collection in the world. The various greenhouses display plants from across the world in climate controlled environments, while Kew Gardens Gallery houses art and photographs illustrating botanical themes. Queen Charlotte's Cottage (open only in summer) is a pretty summerhouse lying alongside a lake. The Chinese Pagoda is arguably Kew's most recognizable structure.
The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew is widely recognised as one of the leading centres for advice and action on aspects of plant and fungal conservation. Conservation programmes are undertaken on a wide range of endangered and threatened plants and their habitats. An advanced range of techniques, including storage and cryopreservation of seeds, embryos and pollen, and micropropagation, are used to support both ex situ and in situ conservation projects. The gardens are increasingly called upon for advice and to help with the development of international conservation strategies.
The research focuses mainly on collections of plants, both living and preserved, and scientific literature. Full use is made of the extensive human knowledge base and expertise in taxonomy and horticulture in the institute as a whole. Research, documentation and conservation are all based on the collections in the Gardens, curated and conserved through our horticulture.
