Stanley Spencer Gallery online: information and bookings
The Gallery
Just a few miles up river from Windsor you will find a treasure filled gallery devoted to the life and work of one of Britain’s greatest artists. Sir Stanley Spencer (1981 -1959) was born and worked for much of his life in Cookham – a small village surrounded by stunning countryside, most of it now managed by the National Trust. Spencer was inspired by his childhood walks in the meadows and marshes along the banks of the Thames and his love of the village and its inhabitants is obvious in his many and varied works. Early religious influences inspired his depiction of the Last Supper which he set in the local brew house, one of the major works on permanent show at the converted Methodist chapel which now houses the gallery.
Current Exhibition
‘Stanley Spencer and the River Thames’ shows his love of the river – ‘Swan Upping’, ‘Dinner on the Hotel Lawn’ and ‘Turk’s Boatyard’, are on loan from Tate Britain. From the Gallery’s own collection you can marvel at ‘View from Cookham Bridge’ and the magnificent unfinished masterpiece ‘Christ Preaching at Cookham Regatta’.
