Royal Museums Greenwich online: information and bookings

Royal Museums Greenwich is a group of world-class museums incorporating the National Maritime Museum, Royal Observatory, Cutty Sark and the 17th Century Queen’s House, situated within two hundred acres of Royal Greenwich Park land, at the heart of the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site.

The National Maritime Museum is the world’s largest and most important museum of its kind in the world, filled with fascinating galleries and inspirational stories of discovery and adventure at sea. Experience the story of Britain and the sea and the importance of the ocean in our lives today, through captivating artefacts and accounts of discovery and adventure. Whilst primarily historical, the museum displays also cover modern issues such as global warming, the continuing importance of sea trade and the sea as a focus of leisure and cultural interest.

Cutty Sark reopened in 2012 beginning a new chapter in the extraordinary life of a London icon and one of the world’s most famous ships. Venture aboard the last surviving-tea clipper, explore the cargo hold and see what life under sail was really like. Enjoy a cup of Cutty Sark-inspired tea as you sit directly beneath her vast, awe-inspiring hull and marvel at the elegant lines that made her the fastest and greatest of her time.

A true hidden gem, the Queen’s House is an architecturally picturesque 17th-century royal house which displays an internationally significant art collection, including works by Gainsborough, Reynolds, Hogarth, Turner and the van de Veldes. Construction of the house begun in 1616 by James I for his queen, Anne of Denmark, and completed in 1638 for Charles I’s French queen, Henrietta Maria, as her so-called ‘house of delights’. Designed by Inigo Jones as England's first truly classical building, it features the magnificent Tulip Staircase and awe-inspiring Great Hall - a perfect 40 foot cube.

Stand with one foot in the east and the other in the west at the Royal Observatory Greenwich, home of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and the Prime Meridian Line and one of the most important historic scientific sites in the world. Designed by Sir Christopher Wren in 1675 it now houses galleries telling stories of exploration into time, space and astronomy. All four of John Harrison’s ground-breaking timekeepers are kept in full working order on display in the Harrison gallery - the highlight of a visit to the Observatory. Also don’t miss a chance to visit the fabulous Astronomy Centre within the Observatory grounds which hosts the Peter Harrison Planetarium, London’s only planetarium, taking visitors on exciting cinematic journeys through space guided by professional Observatory Astronomers.

Royal Museums Greenwich is the perfect destination for the whole family, whether you want to experience a slice of history or simply to soak up the picturesque views and world famous architecture of the World Heritage Site.
