Markenfield Hall online: information and bookings
The story of Markenfield is one of the saddest and most romantic in English history. Deeply intertwined with the fortunes of nearby Fountains Abbey, this great house was one of the most important centres of the Rising of the North in 1569, which was to be its tragic downfall.
Tucked privately away along a mile-long winding drive, just three miles south of Ripon, the Hall has been described as Yorkshire’s best-kept secret. Not visible from the road, a glimpse of the imposing east wall cannot be seen until visitors reach the old Mediaeval road near to the top of the drive. But for a quirk of fate – and a turnpike act of 1777 – Markenfield would be one of the most recognisable houses inYorkshireand the nearby A61 would run along this now-Bridleway just 200 yards from its façade. As it is, the house is approached from the A61 Ripon toHarrogate Road along a humble farm track, past agricultural buildings and farm workers’ cottages.
The Chapel of St Michael the Archangel stands at the physical and spiritual heart of Markenfield Hall – a beautiful and tranquil space with a soaring ceiling and imposing East window.
The Chapel is an ancient Catholic one, in which Anglicans also worship by Catholic invitation. In practice, the services are alternate, roughly once a fortnight.
From an Anglican viewpoint, the Chapel (and its 600 acre parish) is classed as an Ecclesiastical Peculiar – that is, exempt from the control of the Bishop, which it has probably been since the Reformation. In practice, the Bishop is most welcome and takes occasional services here by invitation.

WEDDINGS NEAR RIPON
Markenfield Hall, its outline reflected in the encircling moat, provides a wonderfully intimate venue for a wedding. Hidden in the rolling North Yorkshire countryside, yet within easy reach of Ripon, Harrogate and Leeds, Markenfield Hall is a unique and beautiful venue for a small wedding.
Your Day… Unlike many venues, Markenfield Hall does not offer a fixed wedding package. Because of the intimate nature of the Hall, and the guarantee that yours will be the only wedding here on the day, we are able to tailor your day to your needs.
Because it is our private home we take a lot of trouble to ensure you have everything you want. With a variety of rooms available, as well as our own private chapel, the gardens within the moat, the black swans who will probably visit you in the orchard and the cows from the farm often peering across the moat fence to see what’s going on; we can tailor a bespoke day that will live in your’s and your guests memories for ever.
In case of alteration, please check prices, opening times and any specific important information before booking or visiting
