North York Moors National Park online: information and bookings

The North York Moors is one of our most treasured landscapes. Rolling heather moorlands, picturesque dales and a rugged coast make it an ideal place to escape from the pressures of modern life. But with so many visitors flooding here each year, it is important that we protect this landscape which we enjoy so much.

The North York Moors is a National Park, one of just 8 such protected landscapes in England. The National Park’s job is to conserve the special features of the area and to help people enjoy and understand them.

Few places have such a variety of things to see and do. The open moors offer a freedom and solitude that is rare in today’s crowded planet. Descending into the sheltered dales is like entering another world of winding streams and deep woodlands.

The coast too has many special qualities: high, windswept cliffs, secluded fishing villages, sea birds roaming effortlessly on the wind…

History and wildlife add flesh to this landscape. Bronze age barrows, mediaeval castles and later industry including coal pits and ironstone mines remind us of people who lived here long before us. The haunting ruins of Rievaulx and Byland Abbeys are a fitting testament to hundreds of monks who once tamed the land.

Look out too for the wild animals and plants that have made their homes in the area. Explore carefully and you could well stumble on some of nature’s greatest treasures, from tiny insects to mighty oak trees. With hundreds of miles of public rights of way, quiet activities such as rambling and pony trekking are the best ways to enjoy the area’s natural beauty.

We can all do our bit to protect the North York Moors. Keeping to footpaths and not dropping litter are obvious to any country lover. But if you are planning to come here on holiday, why not leave your car at home?

Cars can be a real environmental menace, and no-one wants to see the Moors overrun with traffic. Public transport is an easy alternative that is kinder to the environment. Trains and buses can take you to many sites in the Park, and during the busiest times of the year the National Park runs its own Moorsbus service. Once you are here, the best way to discover the countryside is on foot, bike or horseback.

So why not enjoy a trouble free holiday without your car?
