Chicheley Hall online: information and bookings
Sir John Chester started building Chicheley Hall in 1719 and completed the structure in 1723. The fitting of the interior was finished in the summer of 1725. It stands as one the country's finest examples of early Georgian architecture. It has some extraordinary features including the great hall which has a ceiling painting depicting Herse and her sisters sacrificing to flora, by William Kent. The staircase has a curious divided run from the second floor to the attics, which in the early 1800's suited the practical arrangement of separating the family from the servants.
The house boasts some of the finest panelling and carving work both in cornicing and pediments.
The surrounding grounds and parkland date back to the site of the original house that Sir John Chester first inherited in 1698. The unique canal and new garden were added to the east side some time later. The present subtle colour scheme was created by Felix Harboard for when Earl Beatty bought the house in 1952.
The house is still lived in today by Sir John and Lady Nutting who give over a large proportion of the house and grounds to provide a unique and exclusive facility for training days conferences and private functions.
