Hopetoun House online: information and bookings

Hopetoun House, located 12 miles west of the City of Edinburgh, is set in 100 acres of magnificent parkland.

The building of Hopetoun was started in 1699 by the well known Scottish architect, Sir William Bruce. Much of the original interior may still be seen in the central part of the House.

Considerable changes were made after 1721 by William Adam, another famous Scottish architect whose alterations included the building of the State Apartments and the realignment of the Colonnades and Pavilions, resulting in the magnificent frontage to the house considered by many to be his finest work. William Adam died in 1748.
His son, John, superintended the completion of the building and the interior decoration which may be admired in the State Apartments to this day.
The House contains fine carving and elegant plaster ceilings, trompe l’oeil and other paintings by famous artists, wall hangings and furnishings designed for Hopetoun in the 18th century. From the Rooftop Platform visitors may enjoy panoramic views over the countryside and the River Forth with its famous Bridges.

To the west, encircling the vast lawn where once lay a formal parterre of arabesque and shell design, are woodland walks with Deer Parks extending to the shoreline. Nature Trails have been laid out and Countryside Rangers are on hand to provide extra information as required.

Hopetoun has been the home of the Earls of Hopetoun (later created Marquesses of Linlithgow) ever since it was built. The present head of the family, Adrian Hope, is the fourth Marquess. In 1974 the family established a charitable trust to own and preserve the house with its historic contents and surrounding landscape for the benefit of the public for all time. The family, therefore, are no longer the owners, but they still have a home in part of the house as tenants of the Trust.

Hopetoun House is open to visitors from Easter to the end of September and for functions and special events throughout the year.
