Buckland Abbey
NATIONAL TRUST online: information and bookings

Enjoy a day at Buckland Abbey, the home of Sir Francis Drake. Tucked away in its own secluded valley above the River Tavy, Buckland Abbey was originally a 13th-century Cistercian monastery. Uniquely after the dissolution of the monasteries Buckland was converted into a Tudor home by Sir Richard Grenville and then sold to Sir Francis Drake.

Take a voyage of discovery through 700 years of history, as the stories of the house unfold through exhibitions, ancient buildings and furnished rooms. Explore the legendary life of Sir Francis Drake and the story of the Armada. See Drake memorabilia, including his famous Drum and standards. The Great Hall and Drake Chamber both feature interesting decorated plasterwork and the kitchen has the atmosphere of four centuries of domestic use.

The gardens include a beautiful Elizabethan Garden that was created in 2001. The estate offers four way marked trails through woodland and a family letter box trail.

Home cooked meals are served at the Refectory restaurant and the National Trust shop and two independent craft workshops are normally open.

Pre-booked groups are welcome and groups of more than fifteen qualify for discounted admission.
