Battlesteads Hotel online: information and bookings

Converted from an 18th century farmstead, Battlesteads retains a real Northumbrian country atmosphere with beamed ceilings and fascinating historic prints lining the walls. A stylish country Inn, it features an 80-seat restaurant and a light and airy conservatory leading to a secret walled beer garden. The bar features 4 cask-ales including Durham Magus, Wylam Gold Tankard and both Black Sheep Ale and Black Sheep Special. The wine list runs to over 20 excellent varieties.

One of Englands greenest hotels, Battlesteads has won many awards for its eco-friendly approach to hospitality.

Northumberland is England's most secluded county and the wild lands to the north of Hadrian's Wall have a romance all of their own.

For drivers it is like stepping back 60 years; it is possible to drive for half-a-day down twisting country roads without seeing another vehicle, apart from the odd tractor or forestry lorry. At every turn is a castle or turret or fortified Pele tower - the landscape is dotted with ancient settlements, stone circles and mysterious 'cup and ring' marks (Northumberland has more castles within its borders than anywhere else in the world).

Ideal for exploring Hadrian's Wall and Border Reiver Country, Battlesteads is situated on the B6320 Bellingham road, 12 miles north of Hexham from the A69.

Battlesteads has rapidly gained an enviable reputation for fine food in north Tynedale; chefs source the best of local ingredients to ensure freshness and flavour, including seasonal game and Northumbrian reared lamb as well as prime Cumbrian beef. Vegetarian choices are always available. The style is primarily modern British but with a smattering of international choices for those with a more cosmopolitan palate.

Meals, snacks and sandwiches are available throughout the day, with both a set menu and 'Chalk Board' specials, which change weekly, those with a sweet tooth should check out the mouthwatering home-made desserts.
