Set in 175 acres of parkland and boasting 21 buildings of major historical importance the Royal Gunpowder Mills opens its secret 300 year history to the world.

With a history starting in the 1650‚s, the site has been once of national importance through major conflicts from the Napoleonic War through the two World Wars and beyond into the age of the rocket. Closed by the MOD in 1991,the site has been transformed into a visitor attraction combining excitingscience, fascinating history and beautiful surroundings and wildlife.

Learn about this uniquely conserved location, its impact on society from the locals of Waltham Abbey to the world at war. Our award-winning exhibition tells the story in an engaging and informative way.

Many listed historical structures and canals combine with extensive wooded areas creating a hidden world with a thriving ecology. Take our self guided nature walk with map and information on flora and fauna to watch our for or if you are feeling less energetic take the land train with knowledgeable guide to tour the parts of the site not accessible on foot.

There is plenty to keep children happy. A special version of our self-guided nature walk with animal characters to spot and games to play will introduce them to wildlife. Our interactive exhibition is a fun way to learn about history and our 1940‚s toyshop, general store and kitchen show them about how children used to live.

Our events programme is extensive and diverse with a variety of history days, re-enactment events and shows for all. Our popular VE weekend is a mix of re-enactors, living history and the legendary Spitfire performing an aerobatic display on the final day. Family theme weekends include Home Front, Victoriana and Gunpowder, Treason and Plot ˆ the Guy Fawkes Story.

We are open every weekend and Bank Holiday Monday between May and September and during the week for pre-booked groups and education visits.
