Grimsthorpe Castle rises majestically from the flat landscape of south Lincolnshire, surrounded by its extensive park. It is located on the A151, 10 minutes drive from the A1 trunk road, just North of Stamford.
Over 700 years of history await the discerning visitor.
It has been the home of the de Eresby family since 1516, when it was granted by Henry VIII to the 10th Baron Willoughby de Eresby on his marriage to Maria de Salinas, lady-in-waiting to Queen Catherine of Aragon.
The dramatic North Front (pictured) is the last work of Sir John Vanbrugh. It was commissioned in 1715 by his friend, Robert Bertie, the 16th Baron Willoughby de Eresby, to celebrate his enoblement as the first Duke of Ancaster and Kesteven.
On the other side of the castle Tudor building work survives and provides a contrast, opening onto manicured lawns and gravel pathways that offer tranquility and beauty to the visitor as they thread through the trees.
The collection of fine furniture, associated with the family’s hereditary Office as Lords Great Chamberlain to the Palace of Westminster, includes thrones and furnishings from the House of Lords. These can be seen in the suite of state rooms along with family portraits, tapestries and many other treasured objects.
Outside, the formal flower and topiary garden leads imperceptibly into the woodland garden, and provides a fine setting for the ornamental vegetable garden and orchard, created in the 1960’s by the Countess of Ancaster. Intricate parterres marked with box hedges lie close to the Castle and a dramatic herbaceous border frames views across the lake.
The castle is the centrepiece in a 3,000-acre park of rolling pastures, landscaped lakes and historic woodland. The mediaeval deer park and Tudor oak woods are crossed by fine avenues of trees. It is a haven for wildlife.
Besides three species of wild deer, which you may glimpse in the park, children (and adults) will love the opportunity to feed the tame deer near the coach house.
