Knebworth has been the home of the Lytton family for over 500 years. The house was built in 1490 by Sir Robert Lytton, who fought with Henry Tudor at the Battle of Bosworth.
Successive generations have made their mark on the house. The High Gothic décor of turrets, domes, gargoyles and mythical beasts, introduced by Sir Edward Bulwer Lytton, the novelist and statesman, in 1843 remains the most striking feature of the house today.
Inside there are many beautiful rooms to see, all richly furnished and containing exquisite works of art evoking the lifestyle and splendours of bygone ages.
Charles Dickens acted here in private theatricals and Winston Churchill painted at his easel in the Banqueting Hall. Knebworth was the home of Constance Lytton, the suffragette and also of Robert Lytton, Viceroy of India.
Knebworth's tranquil ornamental gardens, originally laid out in the seventeenth century and later simplified by Sir Edwin Lutyens, contain many features including the restored Maze, the Rose Garden, Gold and Green Gardens, a Jekyll Herb Garden, a Walled Kitchen Garden, a Victorian Wilderness area and pollarded lime avenues.
The Dinosaur Trail, which is set within the Wilderness Garden, has a display of 72 life-size dinosaurs grazing amongst the rhododendrons and the redwoods.
The 250 acres of rolling parkland contain herds of Red and Sika Deer, a large Adventure Playground, and they provide the setting for a wide variety of special events each summer.
