HISTORIC ST ALBANS

PLACES TO VISIT AND ATTRACTIONS IN ST ALBANS, HERTFORDSHIRE, ENGLAND - HISTORIC HOUSES, CASTLES & GARDENS AROUND ST ALBANS, HERTFORDSHIRE - BRITISH & UK ATTRACTIONS

Verulamiuim was the third largest town in Roman occupied Britain and the Museum tells the story of everyday life in Roman Britain.

Set in 100 acres of parkland near Roman theatre and hypocaust, on the site of one of the major cities in Roman Britain. Recreated Roman rooms, magnificent mosaics and wall plasters, touch screens, video and hands-on discovery areas.

Entrance from the car park is via a rotunda loosely designed to reflect Roman construction techniques. The initial display covers the pre- Roman town of Verlamion and its Iron Age artefacts. There is also a DVD presentation on the history of Verulamium using computerised reconstructions to show the town in its prime. From here the museum is divided into sections. each displaying a different aspect of Roman life in Verulamium. This has meant the museum has retained its structured attitude to the layout of exhibits so that any visitor can take in each section without being overwhelmed by the information on offer.

A short walk from the museum is the site of one of the few true Roman theatres in Britain. It has banked seating facing the stage, with a re-erected stage column. The Theatre was built around AD 130. The site is in private ownership.
