Lovelady Shield Country House Hotel has been described as England's best kept secret by our guests.
This elegant Georgian Country House Hotel stands on the former site of a 13th century convent on the banks of the River Nent, which nestles in the foothills of Alston Moor.
There are 3 acres of secluded gardens in which to sit and relax whilst enjoying the unspoilt views of the surrounding countryside.
For our guests who like walking there are many walks and public footpaths on the doorstep.
There is an intimate cocktail bar along with a library and lounge with log fires. The highlight for many is dinner, which is served in our elegant dining room. The menu varies daily and is imaginatively prepared by our Master Chef, Mr. Barrie Garton.
Our hotel is situated 21/2 miles from Alston in Cumbria and is easily accessible from all parts of the UK. Our location makes it an ideal centre from which to visit the Lake District, Hadrian's Wall, the North Pennines, Durham Cathedral and the Yorkshire Dales. Return to escape the crowds and enjoy the experience of dinner with its luxurious food and wines.
The hotel retains the ambience of a private residence and guests are warmly welcomed by the owners Peter & Marie Haynes.
We presently serve Sunday luncheons on the 1st Sunday of each month, although other dates may be available on request.
We have consistently received rosette awards from the AA for the high standard of our food.

Our restaurant provides elegant surroundings in which to enjoy the award winning cuisine prepared by our Master Chef, Mr. Barrie Garton
Barrie's menus are imaginative and varied using mostly local produce. He describes them as being "British with continental excursions".
Our wine list of over 100 wines has been short listed for the 'Wine List of the Year'. In 2002 we were awarded North west Wine List of the Year by Les Routiers.

WEDDINGS AND HONEYMOONS IN ALSTON, CUMBRIA
Lovelady Shield has been used as a venue for marriage ceremonies and receptions for a number of years and has prided itself on being a very special place for what is arguable one of the most important events of a lifetime.
We are a small country house hotel where you can have exclusive use of the property for the weekend. We can accommodate upto 27 guests in the house and can arrange for any more guests to stay at hotels or guest houses within a very short distance. Why not start the celebrations with the arrival of friends and relatives for an informal get together the night before? Then wake refreshed for the ceremony (which can be held in the gazebo in the garden, weather permitting, or in the lounge.) followed by a four-course wedding breakfast served in our award winning restaurant by our Master Chef, Barrie Garton.
We will take care of everything. The pressure is then off you, which allows you to enjoy your day as it unfolds.
