The charming unspoilt County Town of Hertford and Hertford Castle lie 25 miles from London, amid the rolling countryside of East Hertfordshire, steeped with over 1000 years of history since before Saxon times.

The site has been occupied since from when the Normans built their first Mote and Bailey fortification by the River Lea. The 15th Century Gatehouse is all that remains today of Hertford Castle surrounded by the 11th Century stone and flint Curtain Wall.

Together with a year-round calendar of events, including Summer Band Concerts, Castle Gatehouse Open Days and a Family Fun Day, The Castle offers the visitor a place to enjoy the tranquility and beauty of the Castle gardens and gentle flowing river.

Within walking distance the interesting town centre contains fascinating architecture, friendly and specialist antique shops, bustling Saturday market, Museum and the oldest Quaker Meeting House (still in use). With eating places and public houses to suit all tastes and pockets.
