Powderham Castle online: information and bookings
Powderham Castle is the delightful family home of the Earl & Countess of Devon. Built in 1391 by Sir Philip Courtenay and remaining in the same family since, this splendid Castle is just a stone’s throw from Exeter, set in a tranquil deer park alongside the Exe estuary.
Its stunning location offers glorious views for miles around and the majestic rooms, fine interiors and collection of treasures are equally as impressive.
The Castle and grounds are available to hire as a filming location, wedding venue or for a corporate event and between April and October Powderham is widely considered one of the best days out Devon.
Entertaining guided tours bring the history to life while outside there are acres of gardens and grounds to explore. Each season brings with it a reason to visit, from the bright yellow daffodils aligning the drive and the peaceful haven of the Woodland Garden, with its attractive blooms in Spring to the explosion of colour from the roses and wisteria in the Rose Garden over the summer. The on-set of Autumn frames the Castle with stunning shades of crimson and yellow as the herd of fallow deer begin their rutting season in the surrounding Deer Park.
The Deer Park Safari, available at peak times and all season to pre-booked groups, offers the chance to get a closer look at the wonderful wildlife on the estate.
The Walled Garden, a popular spot for families, is a short walk from the Castle and home to the many friendly Powderham pets. Picnic spots are aplenty, but the homemade treats served in the Courtyard Cafe are tempting too. Powderham Castle plays host to a number of events all year round from Garden Festivals and Food Festivals to concerts and open-air theatre. Not forgetting the famous themed weeks aimed at children, but enjoyed by everyone!
