Scottish Fisheries Museum online: information and bookings

Spectacularly situated on the harbour front in Anstruther, in the heart of the Fife fishing community, the Scottish Fisheries Museum tells the story of fishing in Scotland and its people from earliest times to the present.

Since it was opened in 1969 the Museum has grown in size and in the range of its galleries. The Museum occupies 27,000sq ft including two “A” listed buildings – a Merchant house (1724) and an Abbot's lodging (16th C), both with fishing associations. In addition to the original courtyard and buildings there is now a covered boatyard and the latest gallery housing a 78 ft “ZULU” fishing vessel dating from the very early 1900s.

The Collection includes more than 66,000 items, 74% classified as of national, UK or international importance and the 18 boats, including two UK national core collection vessels. The Museum has received national awards and, thanks to major restructuring, it can open its doors to disabled visitors too: a series of ramps allow wheelchair access to virtually every part of the buildings.

There is a newly refurbished shop and tea-room, which now include a courtyard patio for those who like to take their coffee al-fresco. Enjoy a bowl of home-made soup and delicious fresh baked cakes in pleasant surroundings, then visit the shop for that unusual gift or keepsake with a fishy theme!

Party visits for groups of all ages are welcome and popular. A guided tour takes approximately 90 minutes and themed tours can be arranged to link in with specific projects or interests.
