Mined for iron over 4,000 years, the Caves represent a unique survival of an ancient Forest of Dean tradition of Free Mining, still producing pigments for natural paints.

Nine impressive caverns open to the public, with displays throughout. There is a tempting tearoom and Cave shop which stocks minerals, books and gifts, including pigments from the mine.

Educational and fun - a great underground experience for all the family! Also Christmas Fantasy - the caverns are transformed into a wonderland where children meet Father Christmas and follow the story of 'Something Special'.

A friendly welcome, great coffee and speciality teas. We sell a wide choice of delicious award winning cakes, homemade soups and light meals. The walls and ceilings are an Aladdin's Cave of mining and local memorabilia.

Additional Services
The Mine shop sells a wide range of gifts, jewellery, books and minerals from around the world, as well as minerals and ochre from the caves. There are souvenirs of your visit to the Caves and for the Forest of Dean. We also stock a range of natural paint products including casein distemper paint or eco-emulsion which are produced from mainly plant-based materials with no petrochemical ingredients.
