Standing in 260 acres of rolling parkland, Bodelwyddan Castle stands between the Clwydian Hills and the Sea – with magnificent views over both.
A unique collaboration between Denbighshire County Council and the National Portrait Gallery permits Bodelwyddan Castle Trust to house three National Collections of Art. The interior has been meticulously restored to its former glory as a Victorian Country house with each of nine galleries reflecting a different fashion statement from the 19th century: these range from “Gothic” to the “Arts and Crafts” movement. Whilst the décor in each of these galleries is of a distinctive flavour – so too is the theme of the art works therein.
The Ladies Drawing room in the north wing of the castle plays host to a series of portraits of prominent Victorian women: Florence Nightingale, Frances Trollope and Elizabeth Browning to name but three – these set in a room featuring Biedermieir furniture. Meanwhile, in the south wing, the Dining Room theme is of “Social Reform” where portraits by John Singer Sargent and Ford Maddox Brown grace the walls of a room furnished by Alfred Waterhouse – better known for architectural works like the Natural History Museum.
Ascending the Jacobean style staircase, the visitor is transported through a display paying tribute to adventurers of the past. Grace Darling and David Livingstone rub shoulders with adventurers en route to the Arctic. Once on the top floor visitors are invited to enjoy a range of Victorian inventions and curiosities including the distorting mirror, Pepper’s ghost, the Kaleidoscope, the Phenakistoscope and the Phonograph.
The castle grounds include formal gardens with peculiar “thermal walls” that permitted the growing of peaches, nectarines and passion fruit – without the need for glasshouses. There is a fine wisteria arch leading on to woodland walks with a bird hide and butterfly glade. For younger visitors there is the adventure playground, garden maze and woodland trail.
Coach and car parking is both abundant and free.

There are three rooms available for civil marriage ceremonies at Bodelwyddan Castle. Set in magnificent park land, the Castle houses nationally important collections of fine and decorative art from the National Portrait Gallery, Victoria & Albert Museum and Royal Academy.
