Sizergh Castle online: information and bookings
Sizergh Castle and its 8.5-hectare garden are at the centre of the National Trust’s Sizergh Estate, near Kendal. Close to major highways (M6, A590 and A591 dual carriageways) a visit to the property guarantees an interesting afternoon from spring through to autumn.
The castle has been the home of the Strickland family for over 760 years. Visitors to Sizergh appreciate visiting a real family home with current family photographs on show alongside ancient family portraits.
The medieval house was extended in Elizabethan times when local craftsmen were employed for decades to create a remarkable series of panelled rooms with Italian-style carved overmantels. The magnificent Inlaid Chamber is considered to be among the finest ever made for an English Country House
The garden provides a wealth of interest for visitors. There are water features throughout with a stream running from the top pond to the lake through a series of pools in the limestone rock garden. The rock garden was created in the 1920s and is the largest limestone rock garden in the National Trust. There are two herbaceous borders, one backed by a ‘hot wall’, and several wild flower areas. Because of the mild climate in this part of England, there are over 2,000 species of plants in the garden
For those who wish to roam further afield, there are three public footpaths running from the car park. Most of the walks on the Sizergh estate reward visitors with stunning views over the estate and the Lyth valley. Walks leaflets are available from the National Trust shop.
Winter building work may delay planned April opening of the property. To avoid disappointment, please telephone or check the NT website before visiting in the spring.
