Great Dixter House & Gardens online: information and bookings

Great Dixter – was the birthplace and home of gardening writer Christopher Lloyd and was built in the middle of the 15th century. Sir Edwin Lutyens was commissioned in 1910 to restore the main part of the house to its original medieval splendour and to build the domestic quarters necessary to accommodate an Edwardian household. A hall house dating from around 1500 was also added. Having been originally located in nearby Benenden, it was dismantled piece by piece and re-erected at Great Dixter.

The Great Hall, constructed of oak culled from the Wealden forest, is one of the largest surviving timber-framed halls in the country and is unique with its combination of both tie and hammer beams, whilst the furniture, tapestries and needlework on display (many of which are the creations of the Lloyd family themselves) offer the visitor a rare insight not only into the way a home has developed over five centuries, but how it continues developing to the present day.

Christopher devoted his lifetime to creating one of the most experimental and constantly changing gardens of our time. Incorporating many medieval buildings, the gardens encompass the house, each complementing the other and providing stimulation for the senses throughout the seasons.

With the variety of clipped topiary, carpets of wild meadow flowers, the ever changing tapestry of mixed borders (including the famous Long Border), dreamy ponds and a startling exuberant Exotic Garden, Great Dixter will both captivate and astonish at every turn and continues to do so throughout every season as Christopher experiments endlessly. The picture changes with the years and with the seasons, providing different experiences, inspirations and surprises at each successive visit.

Many of the plants seen in the gardens can be purchased at our plant nursery. A mail order catalogue is available. We are known as clematis specialists. A range of gifts that are unique to Great Dixter can also be bought in our gift shop.
