Set in the wild Western English Lake District, with a breathtaking view of Eskdale from the Terrace … once described by John Ruskin as “Gateway to Paradise”…. Muncaster Castle has something for everyone. This Historic, Haunted castle is the home of the Pennington family and has been since the 13th Century!

A walk through the castle brings you seven centuries of glorious history. The free audio tour contains a wealth of interesting and humorous family anecdotes which add immensely to the enjoyment and create a unique atmosphere in which to view the superb antique furniture, portraits by famous artists, beautiful tapestries and many other articles of historical and artistic merit.

Experience the wild beauty of over 70 acres of gardens. Check out the wonderful Himalayan Gardens featuring many specimens rarely seen in the West. Home to Europe’s oldest leading collection of rhododendrons. There are many wonderful walks and trails including the three hour Wild Walk which allows visitors into areas with superb views previously not available to the public.

Muncaster is the home to the World Owl Trust, home to 45 species, which strives to conserve owls and their habitat world-wide, Daily at 2.30pm (mid February to November) a presentation is given on the work of the Trust and (weather permitting) the birds fly. At 4.30pm the wild Herons are fed on the cannon bank by the castle.

Visit the new undercover MeadowVole Maze and shrink to just two and a half inches tall, try and reach the other side without being eaten! You’ll find out what life is like for these tiny creatures. On winter weekends Darkest Muncaster transforms the wild woods into an enchanted garden with light shows, special effects and music.

Light meals and refreshments are available in Creeping Kate’s Kitchen, and gift shops provide that special memento of your visit. and the newly opened Plant Centre stocks over 250 different varieties of hardy shrub, along with an extensive herb collection and seasonal plants.
