Abbey House Hotel online: information and bookings
Set in 14 acres of private woodlands and gardens, the hotel takes its name from the neighbouring ruins of one of the greatest Cistercian foundations in the country, Furness Abbey.
The ‘Abbey’ echoes the quiet grandeur of life in days gone by. Built in 1914 by Sir Edwin Lutyens, the original sandstone mansion was the home and guesthouse of Commander Craven, Chairman of Vickers Shipbuilding. Many dignitaries came to stay, including King George V The Prince of Wales and the Queen Mother whilst she was Duchess of York.
Upholding this tradition of hospitality, today’s management treats its guests like royalty, too. So much so that the captains of business and industry have made the hotel a regular venue for their conferences and seminars.

Restaurant
They say living well is the best revenge. If that’s the case then food, glorious food is central to the plot.
It’s “chacun a son goût” at the Abbey Restaurant. Whatever your tastes or dietary preferences, there’s always something to stimulate the palate. Including the finest of wines ‘for thine stomach’s sake’. From gastronomic banquets to set menu Sunday lunches, the world is your oyster.
Following an elegant sufficiency, you might like to visit to the Abbey Bar for a nightcap, or to admire one of the many original Harold Riley paintings.
Weddings and Conferences
Weddings - Furness has its own ‘deep retreats’. The hotel is a real sanctuary from the outside world. Which is why many couples choose it for their wedding day.
There’s something special about getting married here. Perhaps it is the blissful surroundings. It could be the privacy of the grounds or the unique ambience of the hotel. Couples appreciate the ease with which they can accommodate the interests of family and friends (a wide choice of menus, as well as special rates and discounts for guests are available). Everything is totally devoted to you.
Business - With our purpose built conference centre combined with our original stately building we can cater for your intimate business seminar in our smaller syndicate rooms or a major conference for up to 300 delegates.
