Brantwood online: information and bookings
Brantwood, the home of John Ruskin from 1872 until 1900, is the most beautifully situated house in the Lake District, enjoying the finest lake and mountain views in the area. There is no other house in the district with such a diversity of cultural associations. Tolstoy, Mahatma Gandhi, Marcel Proust and Frank Lloyd Wright can all be numbered amongst Ruskin’s disciples.
Ruskin, an intellectually powerful man, influenced many with his art and art criticism, comments on society and economics and work studying the environment and the effect of man on the environment. Today Brantwood not only preserves Ruskin’s legacy, but also strives to promote the relevance of Ruskinian ideas in today’s society.
An entire day of exploring and learning is possible at Brantwood and the 250 acre estate. There is a video presentation in the house where you can learn more about this extraordinary man before visiting his house filled with original furniture, artwork and decoration. Brantwood’s extensive estate and gardens are a living laboratory constantly evolving and changing, putting Ruskin’s theories into practice. The estate and gardens are explored and explained in the Linton Room, where there is usually an activity you can participate in.
The Severn Studio hosts a number of contemporary art exhibitions throughout the year. Local, national and international artists display their paintings, photographs, sculpture and crafts in this purpose built artists studio.
Brantwood’s bookshop, stocked with numerous titles is well known for its stock of Ruskin books. The Jumping Jenny restaurant and Coach House Craft Gallery combine for a perfect day out.
