Woburn Abbey online: information and bookings

Home of the Dukes of Bedford for nearly 400 years, the house is now lived in by the Duke of Bedford and his family. The house contains one of the most important art collections still in private hands. The State Apartments and galleries are hung with paintings by many of the great masters, notably 21 views of Venice by Antonio Canale in the beautiful Venetian Room and in the Long Gallery is the famous Armada portrait of Elizabeth I, by George Gower.

The furniture is mainly 18th century English and French and there are outstanding displays of English, Continental and Oriental porcelain. Also in the crypt can be seen superb examples of silver and silver gilt by renowned Huguenot silversmiths, together with a fine collection of miniatures.

Duchess Anna Maria is credited with the invention of Afternoon Tea as a light meal which was served in the Blue Drawing Room. ‘Afternoon Tea’ is a theme throughout the house where many teapots, tea services and related items are on display.
The beautiful 3,000 acre deer park was landscaped by Humphry Repton in the early part of the 19th century. It contains many lakes and much wildlife, including nine species of deer, the most famous of which is the Milu or Père David; once the Imperial herd of China and they were saved from extinction at Woburn.

The South courtyard is now devoted to the unique Antiques Centre and the Catering Department. The former was established
in 1967 and is probably the largest such centre in the U.K. outside London; most of the shops have genuine old frontages which were rescued over the years from demolition sites throughout Britain and restored and erected to form this attractive and imaginative centre.
The Sculpture Gallery, once used as a greenhouse and orangery was
re-designed to accommodate the 5th Duke’s collection of Sculptures and now, with its special situation overlooking the private gardens, offers
a most elegant and prestigious venue for all manner of functions.
