Westenhanger Castle & Medieval Barns online: information and bookings
14th Century quadrangular castle ruins and high status medieval barns in an attractive setting next to Folkestone racecourse.
Westenhanger Castle was once a magnificent residence of great importance.
It was owned by Henry VIII and Elizabeth I who both made brief visits during their reigns. However, its glory days ended in the early 18th Century and what remains today are romantic ruins which tell the story of its illustrious past. The monument has undergone several phases of English Heritage assisted restoration work and retains many features within the ruins of the curtain wall. There are Tudor fireplaces and a stunning dovecote which has 420 nesting boxes.
The medieval barn adjoins an earlier accommodation base court and was built extravagantly with a hammerbeam roof (the style of that in Westminster Hall). It has four wagon porches and was built astride a tributary of the East Stour river.
The owner offers pre-booked guided tours of the site (mid-week only) and these can be arranged by telephoning the number above.
Westenhanger Castle has a peaceful and relaxed atmosphere and is licensed for weddings and functions.
