Houghton Hall online: information and bookings

Houghton Hall is one of the finest examples of Palladian architecture in England. Built in the 1720s by Sir Robert Walpole, Britain’s first prime minister. The original designs were by James Gibbs and Colen Campbell, with interior decoration by William Kent. The Marquess of Cholmondeley has restored the house to its former grandeur, with magnificently furnished staterooms containing many of their original furnishings.

The Hall is set in 350 acres of parkland, home to over 1,000 white fallow deer.In 1991 the Marquess of Cholmondeley started to restore the kichen garden, which has matured into a spectacular 5 acre walled garden. The garden has been divided, by clipped and sculptured yew hedges interspersed with statues, into areas devoted to fruit and vegetables, elegant herbaceous borders, croquet lawn, a formal rose garden with over 150 varies and glass houses. the design of the rose garden is based on the ceiling of the White Drawing Room in the Hall, together with statues and a sunken fountain. Julian Bannerman has designed the rustic temple and the octagonal fruit cage, which is a feature of the kichen garden. The garden is full of colour all summer.

The unique Model Soldier Collection, one of the largest and most comprehensive collections in the world, contains over 20,000 models arranged in various battle formations from the Battle of Waterloo to The Western Desert.

Restaurant provides waitress served lunches and teas. Well stocked shop.
